Mont Blanc Massif: new map in preparation

Workshop journal · Mont Blanc Massif
Today I’m bringing you into the workshop, with a first sneak peek at the new Mont Blanc Massif map currently in preparation.
What you see in the images below is the final rendering of the artwork, now fully defined from both a cartographic and graphic standpoint: it is the result of a long process of framing study and three-dimensional terrain rendering, with the aim of finding a balance between readability, depth, and the character of the massif.
The map is created using an oblique orthographic projection, a choice that enhances the relief and the structure of the valleys while maintaining a clear and coherent representation of the territory.
The horizontal scale is approximately 1:50,000. I deliberately refer to the horizontal scale, as the map uses an oblique orthographic projection: the vertical scale is more compressed, helping to emphasize the three-dimensional structure of the massif.
At this stage, the work includes:
- land cover (forests, pastures, rocks, glaciers), with a palette designed to highlight contrasts and elevation;
- buildings and road network;
- trail network.
Toponymy is still completely missing, which I will address as the final step: it is a delicate phase that requires time and attention, especially in an area as complex and rich in place names as the Mont Blanc region.
I’m very pleased with the result achieved so far: seeing the map fully “standing on its own,” with the artwork complete, is always one of the most satisfying moments of the process. Now I’m looking forward to refining the final details and bringing the map to print.
The map will be printed, as usual, in the 70×100 cm format, with:
- high-quality offset printing;
- 250 g/m² glossy coated paper, with a solid, substantial feel;
- matte lamination, for an elegant and durable finish.
If everything goes as planned, the map will be ready by the end of February.
